Triangulation
Triangulation is a king maneuver that takes two moves to return to a neighboring square, losing a tempo so the opponent is the one who has to give way.
You want the same position with the other side to move. The king walks a triangle — for example d5–c4–d3–d4, or a shorter loop — and comes back a tempo down.
White’s king on d5 and pawn on d4 face a black king on d7. If White could pass, Black would have to retreat and let the white king in. Triangulation is how White “passes” while still making legal moves.
It only works when the opponent has no spare pawn moves. If they can push a pawn and wait, your triangle does not change whose zugzwang it is.
