Philidor position
The Philidor position is a drawing method in a rook endgame: the defending rook stays on the sixth rank until the pawn reaches it, then checks from behind.
The defending king stands in front of the pawn. The rook on the sixth rank stops the attacking king from crossing. As long as that rook stays there, the pawn cannot safely reach the sixth.
When White pushes the pawn to the sixth anyway, the rook drops to the first rank and checks from the rear. The attacking king has no shelter, and the game is a draw with accurate checks.
Leave the sixth rank too early and the attacking king comes forward — that path leads toward Lucena. The coach will name Philidor when the draw is still there if you keep the rook on the sixth.
