Open file
An open file is a file with no pawns on it, and it is the natural home for rooks.
Rooks need room. On a closed file they stare at their own pawns. On an open file they can reach the seventh rank, trade, or swing to the other wing.
The d-file has no pawns. Both sides have already connected their rooks. The first one to seize d1–d8, or to double on it, owns the file.
A semi-open file — only the opponent’s pawn still on it — is also useful. You pressure that pawn; if it takes or advances, the file opens fully.
